Houston Astros Spring Training Location History
1964-84 Cocoa Beach (Cocoa Expo Stadium)
1985-2010 Kissimmee (Osceola County Stadium)
Attending an Astros Game at Osceola County Stadium Osceola County Stadium has been the home of the Houston Astros since 1985.
At 5,300-seat capacity, Osceola County Stadium is the smallest in the league
showing the ballpark prides itself on player accessibility. From mid-February
through March, Astrophiles are allowed to watch every workout—at no charge. Even
on game days, when the gates open at 11 a.m., you can watch both teams take
batting practice.
Unlike newer stadiums, neither the home nor the visiting clubhouse is
connected to dugouts, so players must walk outside with fans where they will
often sign autographs and pose for photographs. The Park itself, with pine
trees lining the outfield, is considered one of the most picturesque for
fans. It’s also family-friendly. In rightfield at the end of the grandstand
there’s a fenced-off playground so parents have the option to drop off kids
who might not want to sit through a game.
For the 2003 season, Osceola County Stadium
unveiled a new look thanks to a $18.3 million renovation project that includes,
a refurbished stadium, with all chair-back seats and added restrooms, concession
stands and a souvenir store. Capacity has been increased slightly, to 5,300.
A new stadium exterior is made of concrete blocks
and wrought iron gates reminiscent of Camden Yards and other retro-ballparks.
For the players the renovations included, a spacious new major-league clubhouse
similar to the one the Astros use at Minute Maid Park, a separate minor-league
clubhouse with cubicles and training rooms almost identical to the one the
major-leaguers have, additional playing-field space for spring bunting and
infield drills and a new office complex for the Astros' staff.
